My name is Akudziweishe, and I’m a 25-year-old medical student in my final year of studies in Johannesburg. My journey to this point has been a long and challenging one, filled with both struggles and triumphs.
I began my university career in 2017, full of hope and ambition, but soon realized the financial burden it would place on my family. My father, who has always been my biggest supporter, had to borrow a significant amount of money to finance my education and cover the cost of tuition. This decision weighed heavily on him, as it put a tremendous strain on his finances.
As I progressed through my studies, my father’s debts continued to grow. By the end of my second year, the situation had become critical. He was faced with the tough decision of taking an early withdrawal from his pension fund to pay off the accumulating debt. It was a sacrifice that showed his unwavering belief in my potential and future as a medical professional.
Being an international student in South Africa added another layer of complexity to my situation. As a non-resident, I found myself with very limited financing opportunities. Scholarships were scarce, and loan options were almost nonexistent. This reality hit me hard, but I was determined not to let it deter me from my dream of becoming a doctor.
Throughout my academic journey, the road has been anything but smooth. There were times when I questioned my ability to continue, when the financial pressures seemed too great to overcome. But it was during these moments of doubt that I received invaluable support from donors like Educate the Children Foundation. Their assistance was a beacon of hope, helping me navigate through the toughest of times.
Now, as I stand on the cusp of completing my final year, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. The dream that once seemed so distant is now within my reach. I am on the verge of becoming a doctor, a role that will enable me to make a positive impact on the health and welfare of our community.
This journey has taught me the power of perseverance, the importance of support, and the value of hard work. I am grateful for every challenge and every helping hand along the way. They have shaped me into the person and soon-to-be medical professional I am today. My commitment to giving back to the community and helping those in need has only grown stronger through this experience. I look forward to the day when I can use my skills and knowledge to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
